Glucomannan vs Resistant Dextrin: Which Fibre Helps You Feel Full?
You had a lighter lunch, felt good about it, and by mid-afternoon you’re hungry again and reaching for the office snack tin. If you’re comparing glucomannan vs resistant dextrin to fix that, here’s the short answer. Glucomannan has the stronger official backing, but only with a strict routine: three doses before meals, lots of water and a choking warning. Resistant dextrin is the fibre you can actually keep up every day, in any drink. It’s the fibre in ADVAGEN PrebioTrim.
Key takeaways
- Afternoon hunger after a light lunch is your body at work, not a lack of willpower.
- HealthHub says fibre keeps you feeling fuller for longer.
- Glucomannan holds an approved EU and UK claim, but it comes with a strict routine and a choking warning.
- Resistant dextrin in PrebioTrim is one sachet a day, stirred into water, kopi or tea.

Why you’re hungry again by mid-afternoon
Eating less sets off a hunger response. Cleveland Clinic explains that when you cut back, “your body produces regulatory hormones that increase hunger and make you feel less full”. So that 4 pm hunger is real, not weakness.
A few everyday habits make it worse:
- Skipping meals. The NHS warns: “do not skip meals – you might end up snacking more because you feel hungry.”
- Short nights. HealthHub explains that when you lack sleep, your body makes more ghrelin, a hunger hormone, and less leptin, which raises your appetite. More on that in how gut health and sleep are linked.
- A low-fibre plate. HealthHub says fibre adds bulk to a meal, and that bulk helps you stay full for longer, so overeating is less likely.
That’s why gritting your teeth rarely lasts: willpower is up against your hormones, your sleep and an empty plate at once. Fibre works with your body instead. The question is which fibre.
Glucomannan vs resistant dextrin at a glance
Both are soluble fibres, and both count as dietary fibre on US food labels. The difference is how each one behaves in water, and what it asks of you every day.
| Glucomannan (konjac) | Resistant dextrin (in PrebioTrim) | |
|---|---|---|
| In a drink | Takes up water and swells; the food industry uses it as a gelling and thickening agent | PrebioTrim mixes in without changing the taste or texture of your drink |
| How you take it | For the EU and UK claim: 1 g three times a day, before meals, each with 1 to 2 glasses of water | One sachet a day in water or your favourite hot or cold drink |
| Approved EU and UK claim | Yes, for body weight, and only alongside a calorie-controlled diet | No listed claim for fullness or body weight |
| Warning attached | Choking warning required by the same rules | PrebioTrim label: avoid if allergic; not for children or pregnant women unless a healthcare professional recommends it |
| US dietary fibre list | Yes (added January 2020) | Yes, as resistant maltodextrin/dextrin (June 2018) |
The US row comes from the FDA’s list of non-digestible carbohydrates that manufacturers may count as dietary fibre on Nutrition and Supplement Facts labels.
Glucomannan: strong official backing, strict routine
Credit where it’s due: glucomannan has an approved body-weight claim in the EU and UK. You can read it in the register of approved health claims on the UK government’s legislation site. It’s based on a 2010 opinion from the European Food Safety Authority.
Read the small print, though. The claim only holds if you take 3 g a day, split into three 1 g doses before meals, each with “1-2 glasses of water”, and only “in the context of an energy-restricted diet”. In practice, that means:
- three doses a day, timed before breakfast, lunch and dinner;
- 3 to 6 glasses of water to go with those doses, every day;
- a calorie-restricted diet alongside it.
The water isn’t optional. Konjac glucomannan is used in the food industry as a gelling and thickening agent, and food scientists note that it swells a lot as it takes up water.
That’s why the same rules require this warning with every glucomannan claim: “Warning of choking to be given for people with swallowing difficulties or when ingesting with inadequate fluid intake”. Products making the claim must also advise taking it with plenty of water so it reaches the stomach.
If you can stick to all that, glucomannan is a fair choice. But it’s a lot to fit around a working day when lunch is a quick plate of chicken rice between meetings.

Resistant dextrin: the easy everyday fibre
The big difference from glucomannan is how resistant dextrin behaves in your cup. HealthHub notes that some soluble fibres soak up water and turn gel-like. ADVAGEN says the resistant dextrin in PrebioTrim “mixes easily without changing taste or texture of beverage”. So your drink keeps its usual taste and texture, with no thick drink and no race to finish it before it sets.
To be fair, the EU and UK register doesn’t list a fullness claim for resistant dextrin. Its strength is something else: a fibre you’ll still be taking next month is worth more than one you give up after a week. For a side-by-side with two other common fibres, read psyllium vs inulin vs resistant dextrin.
Is glucomannan approved in Singapore?
Not in the sense of an official approval. The Health Sciences Authority says health supplements “are not subject to approvals and licensing by HSA for their importation, manufacture and sales”. Its claims rules put the duty on the seller to hold good evidence for any claim. So any fibre supplement sold here, glucomannan included, is backed by its maker’s evidence, not by an HSA approval.
We also found no Singapore regulator page that singles out glucomannan. Some online answers claim it has strong clinical recognition here, but we found no official source for that.
Why we’d pick PrebioTrim for an everyday fibre habit
If you want a fibre that fits into the day you already have, this is the one we make. ADVAGEN PrebioTrim is made “For Healthy Weight Management”, as part of a routine with a balanced diet and regular activity.
What’s inside: a plant-based soluble dietary prebiotic fibre (resistant dextrin) with a proprietary high-potency heat-stable probiotic, which the label says is “also known as postbiotic”. The active ingredients are Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis and resistant dextrin.
The label says the two work together to support “Optimal gut metabolism” and the “Growth of good gut bacteria for overall gut health”. ADVAGEN’s own FAQ describes the fibre as one that “helps promote satiety and a feeling of fullness”.
Why it’s easy to stay with:
- One 5.1 g sachet a day. No timing three doses around your meals.
- Soluble and taste-free, so your drink keeps its texture. It mixes “with any hot/cold beverage of choice – be it coffee, tea, juices or better still water”.
- Heat-stable, so it needs no fridge. The single-serve sachet slips into a work bag.
- Free of stimulants and harsh laxatives. Non-GMO and vegetarian.
ADVAGEN pitches it at adults aged 18 and over with a familiar kind of week: long hours at a desk, not enough sleep, meals at odd times or supper late at night, and plenty of processed, sugary or fried food.
Try ADVAGEN PrebioTrim. A box of 30 sachets was SGD 49.60 in the official shop on 3 November 2026.

A simple daily routine
PrebioTrim works best as part of a routine you can repeat on a busy weekday.
- Pick one drink you have every day. Your morning kopi, a mid-morning tea or a glass of water at your desk. Stir in one sachet. The label says to use it daily.
- Eat three proper meals. Keep lunch, even a light one. Skipping it is what sets up the 4 pm snack.
- Put fibre on the plate too. Vegetables with your rice, fruit after lunch, oats or wholemeal bread at breakfast.
- Start gently. HealthHub advises adding fibre gradually, because too much too quickly can bring gas or bloating. ADVAGEN notes that some people get mild loose stools when they first start PrebioTrim, and that this is generally temporary.
- Protect your sleep. Short nights push your appetite up.

When to see a doctor
See your GP or polyclinic if you feel hungry all the time, tired or unwell, or if your appetite changes suddenly. HealthHub lists fatigue, moodiness, irritability, sleep problems, poor immunity and constant hunger as signs that eating has become too restrictive. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before starting any fibre supplement if you have trouble swallowing, take regular medication or manage a health condition.
“Isn’t this just marketing?”
Fair question. Here’s what stands behind each line. The health facts above come from HealthHub, HSA, the NHS, Cleveland Clinic, the FDA and the EU and UK claims register, each linked so you can check them. The product lines come from ADVAGEN’s own label and pages, quoted where it matters. The fullness line is ADVAGEN’s own description, and we’ve labelled it that way.
What PrebioTrim gives you is a soluble fibre that’s easy to take every day, in a drink you already enjoy. The rest still comes from your meals, your sleep and how much you move. If that sounds like the habit you’ve been missing, PrebioTrim is an easy place to start.
FAQ
Which fibre helps you feel full, glucomannan or resistant dextrin?
HealthHub says fibre in general keeps you feeling fuller for longer. Glucomannan has an approved EU and UK body-weight claim, but only at 1 g three times a day before meals, with water, on an energy-restricted diet. Resistant dextrin has no such listed claim, but it’s far easier to take daily. ADVAGEN says the fibre in PrebioTrim helps promote a feeling of fullness.
Is glucomannan safe to take?
The EU and UK rules require a choking warning with every glucomannan claim, for people with swallowing difficulties or anyone taking it with too little fluid. Products making the claim must also advise plenty of water. If you have trouble swallowing or take regular medication, ask your doctor or pharmacist first.
Can I take PrebioTrim in my kopi or tea?
Yes. ADVAGEN says PrebioTrim mixes with hot or cold drinks, including coffee, tea, juice or water, without changing the taste or texture. The heat-stable postbiotic stays stable in hot drinks, according to ADVAGEN’s PrebioTrim FAQs. One sachet a day is the label direction.
Where can I buy ADVAGEN PrebioTrim?
