What 67 Trial Records Show

What happens when gut bacteria ferment fibre? Bacteria in your large intestine break down fibre that escaped digestion earlier in your gut. This produces short-chain fatty acids and gases. Results differ with the fibre and with the bacteria in your gut, so fermentation does not guarantee a particular change you can feel.

In our evidence census, collected 15 October 2026, 8 of 67 human trial records on resistant dextrin and related soluble corn fibres reported measuring short-chain fatty acids in their abstracts. If you have added fibre and noticed gas, that alone cannot tell you whether it is “working”.

What actually happens when gut bacteria ferment fibre

Fibre fermentation happens when gut bacteria break down dietary fibre that reaches the colon (large intestine). Some of what they produce is absorbed. The rest leaves your body in stool or as gas.

Beans, lentils, oats, vegetables and fruit carry the fibre that gut bacteria ferment in the colon. Illustrative image.

Digestion usually breaks food into parts small enough for your body to absorb. Dietary fibre resists digestion in the small intestine. When fermentable fibre reaches the colon, bacteria can use it as food.

Think of fermentation as bacterial food processing. It produces several substances, including short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). But not every fibre is fermented to the same extent.

So how does dietary fibre work? Fermentation is one route. Fibre can also affect water retention and stool bulk. That is why “contains fibre” does not tell you everything about how a food or supplement will behave.

The word prebiotic means something more specific. The ISAPP consensus defines it as “a substrate that is selectively utilized by host microorganisms conferring a health benefit”. So feeding bacteria is only part of the definition; evidence of a health benefit also matters.

Prebiotics, probiotics and dietary fibre do different jobs. Probiotics involve live microorganisms. Prebiotics are substances used by microorganisms already present. Dietary fibre is a broader category, and not all fibre qualifies as a prebiotic.

Our explanation of your resident gut microbiome versus probiotic supplements covers that distinction. Neither needs to be ranked above the other.

Meet the three short-chain fatty acids

Acetate, propionate and butyrate are the main short-chain fatty acids discussed in fibre research. They can act as energy sources and biological signals. But a measured change is not automatically a health benefit.

Acetate: one of the main products of bacterial fermentation, involved in the body’s energy metabolism.

Propionate: another fermentation product that participates in metabolic processes and signalling.

Butyrate: an energy source for cells lining the colon, also studied for its signalling roles.

The Koh review describes how SCFAs can activate certain cell receptors, affect enzymes involved in gene regulation, and serve as energy substrates. These mechanisms may contribute to health and disease. They do not tell you what you will feel after adding a particular fibre.

A mechanism is not the same as a demonstrated benefit. Showing that a substance takes part in a process does not show that raising it improves that process in every person.

The den Besten review describes SCFAs as fermentation end products. It also highlights contradictory findings and limited quantitative data on how SCFAs actually move through the body.

Stool measurements need care too. A faecal SCFA result shows what is left in stool, not how much the bacteria made and your body absorbed. That missing “flux” data is the gap the den Besten review points to.

Why fermentation also means gas

Gas is a normal by-product when gut bacteria break down certain carbohydrates. You may notice more of it after a dietary change. But gas does not prove that a fibre is delivering a benefit.

According to NIDDK, gas enters the digestive tract through swallowed air and through bacterial breakdown of undigested carbohydrates in the large intestine. Fermentation is one source, not the whole explanation.

That answers “why does fibre cause gas”, but it does not make gas a useful scorecard. More wind does not necessarily mean more beneficial fermentation. Little noticeable gas does not mean fermentation has stopped.

SingHealth notes that a sudden increase in fibre may cause bloatedness because of excessive gas. Its guidance suggests increasing intake gradually over two to three weeks.

Discomfort is not proof that you should keep increasing your intake. Notice how you feel, and avoid making several large dietary changes at once.

For example, if you start a fibre supplement, add a lot more beans and switch every grain to wholegrain at the same time, it is harder to tell what caused any new discomfort.

Our guide to the common causes of bloating gives more context. Persistent or severe symptoms deserve medical attention, not a guess about fermentation.

Does every fibre raise short-chain fatty acids?

No. Different fermentable fibres can produce different SCFA results, and the bacteria already living in your gut may influence your response.

In the Baxter trial, 174 healthy young adults received potato resistant starch, maize resistant starch, inulin or a corn-starch control over two weeks.

Potato resistant starch produced the greatest increase in total SCFAs, including butyrate. Maize resistant starch and inulin did not significantly increase faecal butyrate.

That does not establish a universal winner. It shows that fibres grouped as “fermentable” did not behave the same way in this study. Participants’ own gut microbiota also influenced their response.

What was measured matters too. A study might find a change in one SCFA but not in the total, as one 2010 trial did. Or it might find a shift in the proportion of butyrate without showing greater overall production.

When you read about prebiotic fibre benefits, ask three questions: which fibre was tested, what did researchers measure, and who took part? A result in healthy young adults may not describe someone of a different age or health background.

Our guide to what decides how a fibre behaves in your gut explains why “soluble” and “insoluble” are useful starting points but incomplete descriptions.

What 67 human trial records on resistant dextrin actually measured

Only eight of the 67 eligible trial records in our census (resistant dextrin, resistant maltodextrin and soluble corn fibre, alone or in blends) mentioned measuring SCFAs in their abstracts. Their results did not show a consistent increase attributable to resistant dextrin alone.

The search returned 76 records. After nine exclusions, 67 eligible human trial records remained, spanning 2004–2026. Of these, 54 tested the fibre alone and 13 tested a blend. Eighteen reported on gas, bloating or gut tolerance.

Year

Fibre tested

Who

Dose (g/day)

Length

SCFA result

Link

2026

resistant dextrin

124 healthy men

15

4 weeks

no significant change

Trial

2026

soluble corn fibre

42 adults aged 45-75

18

4 weeks

direction not reported (correlations only)

Trial

2025

soluble corn fibre

20 children with asthma

12

4-6 weeks

no significant change (serum)

Trial

2025

soluble corn fibre + fish oil

30 adults aged 50-75

33

30 days

no change in faecal butyrate

Trial

2021

inulin + resistant maltodextrin

80 overweight adults on a calorie-restricted diet

20

12 weeks

faecal propionate rose

Trial

2012

resistant dextrin (2 trials)

88 healthy adults

8-20

2 weeks

rise not statistically significant

Trial

2010

soluble fibre dextrin / soluble corn fibre (several arms)

20 healthy adults

12

2 weeks

total unchanged, some individual SCFAs changed

Trial

2008

resistant maltodextrin

38 healthy adults

7.5 or 15

3 weeks

shift towards butyrate

Trial

Across the 8 records in the table, four reported no significant change in the SCFA outcome described. One did not report a direction.

The remaining record reported increased faecal propionate. But participants took 10 g of inulin plus 10 g of resistant maltodextrin while on a calorie-restricted diet. The increase cannot be credited to resistant dextrin alone.

“Not measured” is not “no effect”. To be precise, our census identifies measurements reported in abstracts. It cannot show that the other full papers contained no SCFA measurements.

The practical finding is narrower than a product verdict. SCFA measurements were infrequently reported in these abstracts, and the reported results varied. The study doses above are research details, not instructions for taking ADVAGEN Prebio.

What this means for you: a practical way to add fibre

Start with food, increase fibre gradually, and pay attention to tolerance. You do not need to chase a promised SCFA increase to make a considered dietary choice.

Add fibre gradually, drink fluids with it, and note one change at a time. SingHealth gives 30 g and reports an average Singaporean intake of 13 g. The sources differ, and the reported average does not tell you your own intake.

Put food first. Consider oats, wholemeal bread, brown rice, beans or dhal, fruit and vegetables. Pick an addition that fits meals you already eat, rather than changing everything overnight.

Build up over two to three weeks. Give each change time so you can notice how it feels. There is no need for a big jump just to reach a number quickly.

Drink fluids alongside fibre. SingHealth explains that fibre takes up water in the gut, making stools softer and bulkier, so fluids matter as you add more of it. If your doctor has advised you to restrict fluids, follow that advice.

Judge tolerance and comfort. Notice changes in gas, stool consistency and your usual bowel pattern. These observations help you describe your experience, but they cannot reveal your SCFA levels.

Make one change at a time. Keep a brief note of what changed and when. If symptoms persist, that note may help your doctor assess them.

When gas or bowel changes need a doctor

See your GP or polyclinic if gas or bowel changes come with any of the signs below. Do not assume it is simply your gut adjusting to fibre.

Blood in your stool or black stool.

An unexplained drop in body weight.

A change in bowel habit lasting weeks.

Severe or persistent pain.

Symptoms in infants.

Advice meant for adults should not be applied to infants. Under the ISAPP definition, a prebiotic must be selectively used by host microorganisms and confer a health benefit. Being fermentable is not enough on its own. Fibre is a broader category with different properties, so “fibre” and “prebiotic” are not interchangeable terms.

Why does fibre make me gassy at first?

Gut bacteria can produce gas when they break down fermentable fibre, especially after a sudden increase in intake. Adding fibre gradually may make the change easier to tolerate. Gas is not proof of a benefit. You do not need to push through severe or persistent symptoms; those need medical assessment.

Do I need a supplement to make short-chain fatty acids?

No. Gut bacteria can ferment fibre from food to produce short-chain fatty acids. A supplement is optional, and food comes first. A supplement appearing in a study is not evidence that everyone needs it, or that it will produce the same result in your gut.

Is resistant dextrin the same as resistant starch?

No. They are different ingredients, even though the names sound alike and both reach the colon undigested. Resistant dextrin (also called resistant maltodextrin) is a soluble fibre; the one in ADVAGEN Prebio comes from corn. Resistant starch is a form of starch. So a finding about potato resistant starch, like the Baxter trial above, cannot simply be applied to resistant dextrin or to a product containing it.

Method, limits and how to cite this

This was an abstract-level evidence census. It was designed to describe what eligible PubMed records reported measuring, not to give a pooled estimate of effectiveness.

Method

We used the exact PubMed search to find named dextrin and soluble corn fibre interventions indexed as clinical trials or randomised controlled trials. The collection date is stated above.

The counting unit was one PubMed record, even when a record described two trials. We excluded animal studies, comparator-only use, different fibres and unnamed fibres.

The records were coded in two batches against written rules: eligibility, fibre alone versus blend, SCFA measurement and direction, and any report of gas, bloating or tolerance. A separate check then re-read every record coded as measuring SCFAs and searched all 76 abstracts for SCFA terms. It found no missed measurement. Two eligibility decisions on fibre blends were changed and logged.

Limits

We reviewed abstracts only; full papers may report SCFAs that their abstracts omit. We searched PubMed only, using one search wording, and did not grade trial quality or funding.

An absent measurement is not evidence of no effect. Different samples and outcomes are not interchangeable. These findings describe studied fibres, not what ADVAGEN Prebio does in any one person.

ADVAGEN (2026).
